1. Christchurch (South Island)

How I got there: We got here from Sydney via a direct flight. And then rented a car here for our road trip across South Island!

Total duration: We spend an entire day here before heading off to Franz Josef.

Traffic light for children: Green

About the place: This is a very underrated place in South Island. With its English heritage and a cute little town, worth visiting. We got here from Sydney because it was less expensive to fly to Christchurch than to Queenstown. We also wanted to visit the glaciers and do the complete road trip! If you want to do a road trip, you should start from Christchurch and end here, the drives are really beautiful. We also did a small hike, in Heathcote Valley, took a gondola up the mountains and got a beautiful view of Christchurch. The gondola base is in Heathcote Valley, and it traverses the slopes of Mount Cavendish in the Port Hills. Our Airbnb location in the mountains was the highlight of Christchurch. We also visited the botanical gardens here and because this was in Autumn; we had a beautiful display of Autumn colours!
