Cradle Mountain - Lake St. Claire - Tasmania

About the place: Right from the vegetation on the drive through to the lake, it is so breath-taking, so mesmerizing, wonderfully ghostly even. You pass trees with hardly any leaves in them, unusual and strange, intense and captivating, and then you see wild marsupials that are found only in this small Island of Tassie and then you come into wilderness with a lake which has an unusual mix of blue and brown colour. And it is so clear! Crystal Clear has new meaning in this wonderland. You can see each of the rocks in the lakebed, so pure and transparent and untouched. When you see this mountain which actually looks like a big cradle, you will be astonished at its sheer vastness. Clean sharp lines, with this pristine lake flowing below it. Stop it, Mother Nature, this is enough!

How I got there: We drove from Launceston to Cradle mountain and spent a day here, staying at the Cradle Mountain Hotel, another beautiful discovery of mine via the internet. There are hardly any hotels in and around the Cradle mountain itself, you have to drive into the wilderness to get there. There are several hikes that you can do, but we just walked around in the lake.

Total duration: Car journey from Launceston is around 3 hours, you can spend a day here, even though you do not do the iconic hike.
