How I got there: After landing in Aswan in the overnight train, we got to Abu Simbal in a car, with our tour guide.
Total duration: The car ride is about 4 hours and passes by beautiful Nubian villages.
Traffic light for children: Green
About the place: Imagine going to a mountain far away in the desert, after driving past Nubian villages, and then imagine a beautiful pristine and serene lake gently swaying by it. To top it up, imagine a massive ancient temple carved out of a rock, hidden in the mountain. This is Abu Simbal for you. The first temple contains four colossal statues of a seated Pharaoh Ramesses II. Abu Simbel has a second, smaller, temple that may have been built for Queen Nefertari. As you walk inside the magical mountain temple, you can see sunlight perfectly lighting the statues inside, with just the right amount falling on the statues but darkness surrounding it. What machinery they must have had in 1200 BC to have built such amazing structures. You will be mind-blown by the kind of engineering that was used in the ancient world. Go with a tour guide and let them explain to you the amazing tales of the Kings and Queens of ancient Egypt and get to marvel at the Egyptian Hieroglyphs (The formal communication writing system used by Egyptians which includes notable pictures and drawings), that are present throughout the temples.
