How I got there: We flew to Cairo from Sydney. The pyramids are situated in the outskirts of Cairo.
Total duration: The flight journey is almost 30 hours, considering the stop overs.
Traffic light for children: Green
About the place: The Pyramids! One of the 7 wonders of the world. You read about it, you imagine how it would look, and then you get there and are completely blown over, it is nothing as I ever imagined, it so much better! It is so interesting that as soon as you get to Cairo and are driving through the busy roads, you get a glimpse of the pyramids, they are so massive, I never expected to see them from in between the buildings. I shall never forget that first sight when I suddenly saw the pyramids. I always thought they are located so far away, you must drive ages to get there from the city, which is true, but they are so enormous that you can actually see them from the city. As you go close to the pyramids, you can see each of the sand bricks laid so close to each other. Why did they build such huge shrines for the dead? Pyramids were not built for the living; they were built for the dead. Did the Pharaohs have some strange powers that that they held over people, a curse so powerful that it caused such fears amongst people that even after they were dead, they felt they had to honor death to such an extent that they built these shrines? Were there some other purposes for pyramids unbeknownst to man today? How did they even build such large structures?
After you see the main pyramids of Giza, which you can actually go inside to a certain extent and see the insides of the tomb, walk close by to the highly recognizable The Great Sphinx, where you can do the typical "Kiss the Sphinx" Insta shots. And then, a short drive away are the pyramids of Saqqara, notable for its square shaped designs. You can go inside the pyramids here, it truly feels enchanting, you must bend, crawl, and go to view the sarcophagus and the secret passageways of the Pyramid complexes. An adventure straight out of a movie!
