4. Glacial Lakes - Pukaki and Tekapo (South Island)

How I got there: On the drive back to Christchurch from Queenstown, we stopped for a day in the Canterbury region

Total duration: We spent a day in this region.

Traffic light for children: Green

About the place: My most favourite lake must be Lake Pukaki. The blue colour of this lake is so surreal, it is one of those - "You've got to be there to see it for yourselves" kind of a place. The quietness and emptiness of the lakes is what makes it even more pristine. I had seen a lot of photos of the blue colour of the lakes and I thought they were edited photos. I wanted to see it for myself, so I ensured that this lake fit into our itinerary. This was the first time, that I saw a location and started crying. It feels so emotional to see such beauty. I was ecstatic and felt a rare sense of satisfaction that I had seen Mother Nature’s greatest treasures. We all started singing after that, just looking at Lake Pukaki.

Lake Tekapo and Pukaki are an hour's drive apart. Lake Tekapo has the Good Shepard Church, one of the most photographed churches in New Zealand. The night skies are surreal here and these two lakes are a tick off my bucket list! I came back from the trip feeling a thorough sense of satisfaction and rejuvenated.
