Hot air ballooning in Hunter Valley

About the place: Quite an expensive activity, but definitely worth doing once in your lifetime. Hot air ballooning is when you are strapped to a basket and there is literally a gas balloon that takes you into the air, over valleys and creeks. It really looks like the movie "Up". I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how the pilots ride these balloons, lighting up the balloons, almost pushing it upwards, not like anything I have ever seen before. If you are scared of heights, this is definitely not for you, but otherwise, it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. They give you chocolates and biscuits in the baskets and you get to see kangaroos crossing by creeks, you fly really close to the valleys and trees, it is like literally on top of the trees.

An incredibly fun activity! Romantic? Hmmm not when you there will be 20-30 other people with you. But it definitely is an experience to enjoy with a loved one. In the end, you get to fold the balloon you flew in. Also, sometimes when the wind is not your friend, the balloon can drift away in a different direction, but the pilots are very experienced, and you will actually have a lot of fun when that happens. Remember, it is a basket where you stand in, no place to sit down! This activity makes for a beautiful sunrise and it really feels incredibly exciting to see the kangaroos and wallabies below, in their own worlds and who look so tiny from the top.

How I got there: Hunter Valley is a 2.5-hour drive from Sydney, and we drove to this location in a car. Book the earliest flight session available, so you can watch the sunrise from up in the air.

Total duration: 3-4 hours, including the mandatory training that you will receive and then an extravagant brunch buffet to end the balloon ride with.

Traffic light for children: Red
