How I got there: We flew from Hanoi to Hue and it is about a 1.5-hour flight.
Total duration: We spent an entire day in Hue and then went to Hoi An in a car, which was about 4-5 hours journey. Son Sanctuary is about 1.5-hour bus ride from Hoi An and you can spend an entire morning over here.
Traffic light for children: Green
About the place: Firstly, let me start off with Hue! This is in central Vietnam and is very historical. If you are a history freak, this is the place for you! You can know about various stories of ancient emperors and rulers. We visited Emperor Minh Mang's Mausoleum, Emperor Khai Dinh's Mausoleum, Emperor Tu Duc's Mausoleum, and the Imperial City and did a boat trip in Huong river. The architecture is so well preserved. The Mausoleums are high up in the mountains and you get a beautiful thick green view with clouds around you.
Son Sanctuary is a unique culture complex with ancient Indian Hindu influences of deities and heritages and Hindu temples. This place is set in the middle of a really thick forest and mountains and there is a small trek that you get to do to get up there (Alternatively, there are carts that take you up to the top). The unique contemporary influences of Asian cultures leave you feeling awed. I specifically loved how well preserved it is (although it is in ruins because of destruction during the war) and was really puzzled when I though how on earth would they have built this amazing temple complex in 13-15th Century? This is a land of Ancient restored relics, to think that there was so much intelligence, talent and engineering back in the days, leaves you feeling mystified.
