Illawong Walk - Kosciuszko National Park

How I got there: We drove from Thredbo to the start of Illawong walk in Guthega village in the month of January. It is about 75 kms from Thredbo and the drive is a very scenic one. There is plenty of parking available at the beginning of the walk, make sure your car is parked to allow enough space for vehicles to pass through.

Total duration: The walk is about 6-7 km in total and it takes about 4-5 hours with breaks, to take in the beautiful river side views and having a swim in freezing cold water. The path is rough, and, in some places, it is not marked but there is a clear path to travel in.

Traffic light for children: Red

About the place: The views in this place are simply spectacular. The landscape is very dry, raw and with what I call bald trees, that is tress without leaves. The whole place looks like something out-of-this world. If you have watched the original lion king movie, the drive leading up to the walk looks like the first time Simba and Nala see the place where the hyenas live. (Of course, no skulls and bones!). Interestingly, you encounter the type of vegetation that you drive by, in the walk itself but filled with wild flowers along the way.

The walk offers surreal views of the snowy river. I just could not stop taking photographs here. Once you get to the end of the walk (reach the suspension bridge), make sure you get down and have a swim or just dip your feet in the cool water below, its heaven! Whilst doing this walk, the thought that kept occurring in my mind was - "WHY ON EARTH HAVEN'T I DONE THIS WALK TILL NOW?"
