How I got there: We flew from Hoi An to Ho Chi Min city, the flight journey itself takes more than three hours
Total duration: We spent 3 days in this region, before flying back to Sydney
Traffic light for children: Green
About the place:
Can Tho - Mekong Delta
The trip through the Mekong Delta, is a rustic and rural village tour, meandering through the river, passing by villages, learning how they make sweets and honey and other delicacies. The river is very muddy due to sedimentary rocks, the paths are narrow, but the land is very fertile, as with any river deltas. Coconut is a tree whose every part is usable and there are demonstrations on how the coconut fiber is used in the village. You get to have a very authentic lunch in the village.
Floating Markets
Floating markets is a place where, as the name suggests, goods are sold whilst on a boat. It is an enthralling experience to go over here and buy fresh fruits and vegetables. The people who own these markets and boats, live on the boats and are always on the boat, including children. You go in a boat and pass through a lot of these markets, you can buy fruits, vegetables and even coffee is sold here. The experience is so touching, and you feel almost teary eyed, when you see how excited the people are to sell the goods to you. You also get to see how rice paper is made, which is a very traditional and integral part of the Vietnamese diet.
Ho Chi Minh city
This is home to the War Remains museum. It is heart breaking when you go to the museum and learn about the impact war has on people and the kind of effect it has had for generations to come. The museum itself is very enormous and you can easily spend half a day here. Ho Chi Minh city is also close to the Cu Chi tunnels, which we would have all learnt in our history text books. The tunnels are buried so deep in the round, and you get mind blown when you see all that can be accomplished in such small spaces. You would not even know there is a tunnel, its camouflaged so well. You get to do an entire tour through the forests and the tunnels and pass by (Bending almost to your knees) through some of the tunnels that are still intact.
