How I got there: My husband and I drove from Western Sydney to the West Head lookout on a cloudy January day.
Total duration: From Western Sydney, the drive is about an hour to the lookout and from the lookout to the beach, the climb is around 1 km. Although it is marked as an easy track, it is steep as you go downhill, and you must cross some rocks to get there. There are many other walks that start from here and you can get a map of all the walks when you buy the National Park Pass.
Traffic light for children: Yellow
About the place: If you have been to Ku-ring-gai Chase beaches and viewpoints on a bright sunny day, then the views look hugely different to them, on a cloudy day. I guess that is true for any ocean tracks, which reminds us that mother nature is in complete control of everything. It is genuinely nice to see the ocean on a cloudy day, you can see the clouds drifting close to the ocean and sometimes the horizon is not visible. The West Head lookout offers far 360-degree views of islands, and you can see the Palm Beach from here. After going down the hill to the beach, we just sat by the rocks for an hour and felt our minds and thoughts drifting away, this is a great way to meditate, just stare at the ocean! We could not swim or take a dip here as the water was very cold, but just sitting by the ocean, on the rocks and watching the ducks swimming close by made up for it. We had our lunch by the serene waters.
